Free Speech is dead

Not to mention freedom of the press, and of religion. These rights are generally acknowledged as what separates civilization from...well, the alternative, right? Of course right. That is, until now. The obfuscating of the Alberta Human Rights Commission. The case was brought by a radical Saudi Imam before an obscure commission in the Canadian province of Alberta, which before it was perverted to the cause of fascist Islam investigated complaints of discrimination in Alberta, such as in real estate or on the job.

The various specifics of the case can be found HERE, and HERE.

This man, Ezra Levant, was called before the Commission because, in a nutshell, he published cartoons in his newspaper, the Western Standard, that depicted the prophet Mohammed, the immoral sham-Christ of the Muslim faith. The paper is now defunct, but Levant's opening statement at the hearing is quite an eye-opener. I post it here.

It is absolutely ludicrous to say that the Canadian government can legislate what anyone can or cannot put in their newspapers, or talk about, or believe. Levant is correct in saying that he is not the only one on trial, but the inalienable rights of all Canadians. And indeed, how long before it spreads south?

I am here at this government interrogation under protest. It is my position that the government has no legal or moral authority to interrogate me or anyone else for publishing these words and pictures. That is a violation of my ancient and inalienable freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and in this case, religious freedom and the separation of mosque and state. It is especially perverted that a bureaucracy calling itself the Alberta human rights commission would be the government agency violating my human rights. So I will now call those bureaucrats “the commission” or “the HRC”, since to call the commission a “human rights commission” is to destroy the meaning of those words.

I believe that this commission has no proper authority over me. The commission was meant as a low-level, quasi-judicial body to arbitrate squabbles about housing, employment and other matters, where a complainant felt that their race or sex was the reason they were discriminated against. The commission was meant to deal with deeds, not words or ideas. Now the commission, which is funded by a secular government, from the pockets of taxpayers of all backgrounds, is taking it upon itself to be an enforcer of the views of radical Islam. So much for the separation of mosque and state.

This is a grave issue, because it really does put human rights on trial. How ironic that it is being taken up by the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Just one of Satan's little ironies, I suppose. Rest assured, I'll be watching this case closely.

So wait....is this guy like making fun of Muslims? Because not that I go along with any false religion, but I don't think that making fun of any religion is a means of converting the people who believe in that religion. In fact, usually it only turns them away. Like..*stepping on my soapbox* in history, I read about this native Indian who, when told by a missionary that he could become a Christian and go to heaven, replied "No, I do not want to be anywhere where Christians are" because they "Christians" that were trying to "convert" him were so cruel. *stepping off of my soapbox* So....sorry, I don't understand what the guy was writing in the newspaper.

Levant (who is Jewish, by the way) was not trying to convert Muslims to Christianity. In fact, I don't believe he is a Christian. Basically, he reprinted Danish cartoons representing the prophet Mohammed in a newspaper. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. What he's defending at the Human Rights Commission is his Freedoms of free speech, religion, thought, and press.
